Meeting the Faces of New Mexico
Author: facesofnewmexicoI grew up in rural New Mexico. My mom’s family could trace their local roots back to 1600’s. As a child, I heard a cultural mix of New Mexico family stories that told of early Spanish land grant settlers, immigrants and exciting dances with Billy the Kid.
While hearing these stories I realized there is a face to the history of New Mexico. Faces of New Mexico are all around us and have a story to tell. I realized how meaningful and memorable history can be when there is face, a personal connection, to the story that is being told.
Thus, I have embarked on a New Mexico storytelling adventure.
I’m working on an Albuquerque Public Schools grant-funded project that I call “Faces of New Mexico.” I’m meeting different folks from around Albuquerque and other areas of New Mexico, capturing digital stories that connect us, as New Mexicans, to our history. The stories will be found in eLearning courses and other educational lessons for students in New Mexico.
This blog is designed to show the digital stories as well as some on-the-side ”production notes” I take as I capture some New Mexican stories. I hope others will use these personal story learning objects to better connect us, as New Mexicans, to our past. It might even inspire others to make digital learning stories of their own!
Note: This project was featured on KOB-TV, “Eye on New Mexico” on June 14, 2009.
